The grand prix sailplane race is a
fairly recent development in soaring. It's main focus in real life
is to help create more public interest in soaring by providing a style of
race that is familiar to most people. There are no complicated
scoring formulas and the first guy over the finish line is the winner. Sierra Hotel Racing also provides this style of contest. All grand prix contests will be in a single class and all tasks will be racing tasks. This means that an IGC file is not required for scoring. The start gate for all 6 days of a grand prix will be a regatta start. So, be punctual in joining the task to make sure you are up at start altitude when the gate opens. Scoring: The scoring is quite simple. The pilot with the shortest time out on course is the winner. Since all starts are regatta starts, that means the first pilot over the finish line wins the race. The scoring is based on a 10pt system. The winner receives 1 extra bonus point. Points (winner)= 10 - Ranking +1 Points (remaining pilots)= 10 - Ranking As you can see from the above formulae, only the top 9 pilots receive points. The remaining places receive 0pts. However, a bad day is easily recovered as the point spread can be very tight over the course of a full contest. Pilots that land out are scored as follows: Time= Time of the last finisher + 1min. for each km short of the finish. The overall standing of each pilot is the sum of their five best days. |
