What is the SLS 22? Quite simply, it
means freedom. Your tow pilot decide to go fishing today? No
problem. The SLS 22 self launching system gets you in the air easily
and quickly. Just like its full scale cousin, a prop arm extends and
retracts from a well behind the cockpit. The SLS 22 has a direct
drive system, meaning less complexity as the belt driven versions.
The electric motor is mounted at the top of the prop arm.
When launching the sailplane, the speed
controller rolls on the power smoothly. You do not get full power
right away to keep the sailplane from nosing over. Climb rate is
brisk and scale looking. You get about 3 good climbs from a single
charge. That's a lot of soaring!! When you are ready to soar,
shut off the motor, a mechanical prop break stops the prop in the vertical
position and the prop arm retracts back inside the fuselage. The
prop arm doors close and now you are ready to do some soaring. An
electronic sequencer controls the extension and retraction sequence and
opens and closes the prop arm doors. Limit switches detect the prop
arm's position to prevent damage. There is also a photo sensor to
detect the props position before retraction. All of this is from a
single switch on your transmitter.
